BUTARE
Butare town is designated as the intellectual capital of our country. The first secondary school to be built in Rwanda was established in this town and most of the old schools are still there. When you drive from Kigali, before you rich Butare, you cross Nyanza town. This one was the royal capital of our country until 1959 the date of our country to become a republic. The palace of king Mutara IV Rudahigwa is open for visit. Around this palace visitors are taken in a traditional hut and see how Rwandese people used to organize their daily life.
Before you enter the town center you pass by the National Museum, the most interesting in the whole central Africa. Here Intore cultural dancers perform on request. As Butare is located in the south of the country, it can be combined with the Nyungwe natural forest. Half way from Butare, people stop to visit Murambi genocide memorial before they proceed for Nyungwe Park.
Other destinations are Rusumo waterfall, different genocide memorials everywhere in the country, local handcraft makers and so on.
